Kassel State Orchestra
The Kassel State Orchestra is one of the oldest cultural orchestras in Germany and the world. It was first mentioned in 1502 as the court chapel of the Landgraves of Hesse . In 2002 the orchestra celebrated its 500th anniversary.
history
The Kassel State Orchestra emerged from the court orchestra of the Landgraves of Hesse , first mentioned in 1502 . With the support of Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel , it experienced a considerable boom from 1592. Famous conductors in its long history included Louis Spohr from 1822 to 1859 and Gustav Mahler who worked in Kassel from 1883 to 1885. The orchestra has preserved its tradition to this day by performing equally as an opera and concert orchestra.
The orchestra is closely linked to the city of Kassel and its history. The then Prime Minister of the State of Hesse, Georg August Zinn , established this connection as early as 1952 on the occasion of the 450th anniversary celebration: “(The orchestra is, author's note) the musical companion of a checkered history of the city and the state Centuries. "
The ensemble of the Staatstheater Kassel has gained fame over the last few decades through the work of prominent conductors who presided over the orchestra as general music directors: Christoph von Dohnányi (1963–1966), Gerd Albrecht (1966–1972) or Ádám Fischer (1987–1992) . The Italian Francesco Angelico has been General Music Director of the State Orchestra since 2017 .
A particular concern of the orchestra is to bring young people closer to classical music. With projects in schools, school and family concerts, the film music series and the theater youth orchestra, it tries to inspire young people for classical music and to promote their understanding of music.
The highlights of the Kassel State Orchestra's program include the Gustav Mahler Festival and the HNA Summer Open Air , where the orchestra plays in front of up to 30,000 spectators.
The Hessischer Rundfunk also regularly records concerts and opera evenings.
Others
Since 1995 the State Orchestra has received special support from the "Bürger pro A" association, in which committed citizens have come together under the leadership of the SPD politician and former Hessian State Minister Hans Krollmann in order to ensure the musical quality of the Kassel State Orchestra in the long term. The board members of the development association include the Federal Minister of Finance a. D. Hans Eichel as well as the managing director of the Bärenreiter Verlag Leonhard Scheuch .
