Karl Dirnagl (born October 31, 1917 in Munich , † April 16, 2004 in Riederau (Dießen am Ammersee) ) was a German physicist , balneologist and bioclimatologist.

Karl Dirnagl studied physics in Munich . In Riederau, at the American Bioclimatic Research Institute of Manfred Curry , he researched the effects of weather on humans, especially ozone . In 1950 he switched to the newly founded Institute for Balneology at the University of Munich as a research assistant, which he helped to found. Karl Dirnagl was one of the scientific pioneers in balneology and bioclimatology . Dirnagl researched for more than 60 years the mechanisms of action that underlie the influence of baths and the weather on the well-being and health of people. He did research on a variety of biophysical topics. and developed a number of measuring instruments and procedures. Most recently, he was Senior Academic Director at the Institute for Medical Balneology and Climatology. Shortly before his death in 2004 he published his autobiography, which also gives insights into the history of spa medicine .
