Life

Karl Friedrich Hirschberg came from Pirna in Saxony . On July 1, 1765 he was appointed court painter in Darmstadt . On September 5, 1765, however, after the death of Johann Christian Fiedler , Hirschberg's uncle, Johann Ludwig Strecker von Buchsweiler succeeded him as Darmstadt court painter. Thereupon Hirschberg was hired on October 23 of the same year as the third court painter in Buchsweiler. In this position he received a salary of 100 guilders . Hirschberg created a beauty gallery for Ludwig IX. from Hessen-Darmstadt and was also used in the production of soldier pictures for Ludwig's collection. Johann Heinrich Merck described his activity in a letter dated September 18, 1780 to Karl-August von Sachsen-Weimar and Eisenach with the following words: “A third court painter is busy with nothing like French ladies grinding both real and possible ones, and these in all positions and clothes. "

A portrait of Baron Ludwig Carl von Weitolshausen , called Schrautenbach, comes from Hirschberg . An etching by Karl Göpffert based on this painting can be found under the signature Ho 1462 in the graphic collection of the Hessian State Museum .
