Karl Gutzmer

Karl Gutzmer (born February 16, 1924 ; † March 5, 2007 ) was a German bookseller and local researcher who dealt with the history of the city of Bonn and the history of the book industry.

Life

Karl Gutzmer grew up in Bonn in a German-national family. In 1933 he joined the Bundische Deutschen Freischar . After their dissolution in the late autumn of 1933, his group moved over to the Deutscher Jungvolk . From 1937 he belonged to Michael Jovy's youth group and was convicted at the age of 15 for comments critical of the regime and imprisoned for two months. After that he was expelled from the grammar school in 1940 and was able to take the Abitur externally in 1941 in Cologne. He began his studies as a guest auditor and temporary work in a bookstore. From the summer of 1942 he was a soldier on the Eastern Front, most recently as a lieutenant.

After the war, Gutzmer trained as a bookseller at Bouvier in Bonn and worked professionally in this branch, including as the publishing director of Ludwig Röhrscheid Verlag, which belongs to Bouvier. He retired in the mid-1980s.

In 1948 Gutzmer joined the Bonn Homeland and History Association (at that time Old Bonn ). From 1971 to 2001 he was a member of its board of directors, including several years as deputy chairman. Gutzmer was the author of numerous writings on the history of the town and articles for the Bonn press, for which he presented, among other things, the newly published literature on town history. The Chronik der Stadt Bonn (1988) can be regarded as one of his most important publications . He also dealt with the history of the book industry beyond Bonn and the Rhineland and wrote numerous articles for the lexicon of the entire book industry .

In addition, Gutzmer worked as a volunteer archivist for the Bonn Reading and Recreation Society. He was also involved in the Bonn Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation.
