Karl Hecker (ancient orientalist)

Karl Hecker (born July 25, 1933 ; † April 22, 2017 in Münster ) was a German ancient orientalist. From 1977 to 1998 he was Professor of Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the University of Münster and head of the Ancient Near Eastern Department there.

Life

Hecker studied classical philology, Assyriology and Islamic studies in Freiburg, Cairo and Basel. In 1961 he received his doctorate with Oluf Krückmann with a thesis on the language of the ancient Assyrian texts from Cappadocia ; In 1970 he completed his habilitation with investigations on Akkadian epics , and in 1977 he was appointed to the chair for ancient oriental studies in Münster. As early as 1978/79 he was dean of the “Ancient and Non-European Languages ​​and Cultures” department, and from 1982 to 1984 vice dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. Under his aegis, the 32nd Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale on the subject of "Cuneiform literatures" took place in Münster in 1985 . From 1986 to 1992 he headed the specialist committee “Oriental Studies” at the DFG .
