Karl Heinemann (born March 9, 1857 in Deutsch-Eylau , † July 4, 1927 in Leipzig ) was a German literary historian .

Life

He received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1881 with a study on the Hraban glossary and then worked as a senior high school teacher in Leipzig. At the turn of the century he received the title of professor . Heinemann became known to a broad reading public with the generally understandable biographies of Goethe's Life and Works (first in 1889) and Goethe's mother (first in 1891), as well as as the editor of the papers for literary entertainment and the literary annual report . As a scientist, he stood out primarily with works on Goethe , Klopstock and the literature of antiquity. His concise handbook Die Deutsche Dichtung. Grundriß der deutschen Literaturgeschichte (first in 1910), continued after the deaths of Erich Ebermayer , Friedrich Michael and Franz Schultz , was a standard work for German teachers and students of German studies for almost thirty years. Heinemann published the Goethe calendar from 1918 to 1927 . A serious illness, which resulted in restricted mobility, overshadowed the last years of his life. Finally paralyzed in the hands, he could only dictate.
