Karl Heinz Dötz (born September 1, 1943 in Munich ) is a German chemist .

Dötz received his doctorate in 1971 under Ernst Otto Fischer at the Technical University of Munich (dissertation: Synthesis of cyclopropane derivatives with the help of transition metal carbonyl-carbene complexes and their reactivity towards alkanes, silanes and alcohols ) and completed his habilitation there in 1980. From 1986 he was Professor of Organometallic Chemistry at the University of Marburg . In 1992 he became professor for organic chemistry at the University of Bonn .

In 1983 he was visiting professor at Princeton University , in 1990 at the National Chemical Laboratory in Pune and in 1999 at the University of Paris VI (Pierre et Marie Curie).

He deals with organometallic chemistry . The Dötz reaction is named after him. Most recently, he and his group have dealt with haptotropic migrations (migration of organometallic groups in organic ring systems from one ring to an adjacent non-identical ring with possible application as a switch) and with organometallic gelators that immobilize organic solvents by forming branched supramolecular networks.

He gave the Victor Grignard-Georg Wittig lecture of the Society of German Chemists and the French Chemical Society.
