Karl Heinz Schröder (geographer)

Karl Heinz Schröder (born June 17, 1914 in Lunden ; † October 29, 2006 ) was a German geographer and professor of geography at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen .

Life

Schröder studied geography, history, folklore and German at the universities of Tübingen, Kiel and Jena from 1935 to 1939. In 1940 he received his doctorate in Tübingen. phil. and completed his habilitation in 1950.

His scientific life's work is dedicated to the south-west German cultural landscape, geographical studies and settlement and historical geography. His habilitation thesis Weinbau und Siedlung in Württemberg (1950) is the fundamental representation of the Württemberg viticulture from a historical and settlement geographic point of view.

As director of the Geographical Institute, he held the office of bailiff for Hohentübingen Castle from 1945 to 1970 . After the end of the war, Karl Heinz Schröder was a leading assistant in the reconstitution of the Tübingen student council. During his studies he joined the Tübingen fraternity Derendingia (1935) and was able to keep it under cover against Nazi efforts (comradeship "Hohentübingen") and uphold democratic principles.

In 1979 he was awarded the University Medal and in 1984 the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg .
