Karl Heinz Stryczek (born May 5, 1937 in Nikelsdorf (Upper Silesia), † January 24, 2018 in Radebeul ) was a German chamber singer with a bass-baritone voice .

life and work

Stryczek studied at the Leipzig University of Music with Peter Russ . In 1959 he won prizes at singing competitions in Vienna and Toulouse and in 1963 at the Schumann Competition in Zwickau.

From 1961 to 1964 he was a studio member of the Dresden State Opera , where he sang smaller stage roles. From 1964 to 1970 he worked at the state theaters of Saxony in Radebeul , from 1970 until his stage farewell in spring 2002 as a night watchman in the Meistersinger von Nürnberg again at the Dresden State Opera. For many years he was a guest at the Berlin State Opera . Stryczek made his actual stage debut in 1964 at the Landesbühnen Sachsen Dresden-Radebeul as Germont-Père in La Traviata by Verdi. In 1966 he was appointed to the Dresden State Opera, and from 1970 he was also associated with the Berlin State Opera. In 1973 he took part in the premiere of Levins Mühle by Udo Zimmermann in Dresden , and on April 21, 1974 at the Berlin State Opera in the premiere of the opera Sabellicus by Rainer Kunad in the title role. In 1998 Stryczek took part in the world premiere of the opera Thomas Chatterton by Matthias Pintscher . As a guest, Stryczek sang at the Grand Opéra Paris, the Leningrad Opera, the Helsinki National Opera and the Wiesbaden Festival. Stryczek primarily created dramatic and character roles on stage such as Pizarro in Fidelio , Wozzeck , the Count in Figaro's wedding , Scarpia in Tosca , Amonasro in Aida , Iago in Othello and Carlos in Verdi's La forza del destino , the Telramund in Lohengrin and the Jochanaan in Salome by Richard Strauss. In 1994 he appeared in Dresden as an ogre in the modern opera »Melusine« by Aribert Reimann .

In addition to his Orff recordings under Herbert Kegel , he was also involved in the Eterna operatic cross-sections of Lohengrin (as Telramund) and Aida (as Amonasro), and also as Donner in the complete recording of Das Rheingold under Marek Janowski .

In addition to his stage work, Stryczek was highly successful as a concert and oratorio singer. As a concert singer, appearances in Beethoven's Ninth and Orff's Carmina Burana stand out. Stryczek also worked as a music teacher.

Karl Heinz Stryczek died on January 24, 2018 in Radebeul. The funeral service took place at the Radebeul-West cemetery , after which he was buried at sea.
