Charles I († December 13, 1230 ) was the first bishop of Seckau .

Karl was first pastor in Malta in Carinthia, became Salzburg Vice Cathedral in Friesach in 1213 , in 1214 he succeeded Heinrich von Pettau, who was appointed bishop of Gurk, as provost of Maria Saal and from 1217 he was provost of St. Bartolomew in Friesach.

In the same year he was sent to Rome by the Archbishop of Salzburg, Eberhard von Regensberg , in order to obtain papal approval for the establishment of Salzburg's own diocese in Seckau. The foundation of the diocese was in 1218 by Honorius III. granted and confirmed by Emperor Friedrich II . Charles was apparently appointed its first bishop because of his services to the establishment of the diocese. The area of his diocese extended from the Seckau Alps over the Gaberl into the Kainachtal and up to the Mur near Wildon. The collegiate church of the Augustinian canons of Seckau became a cathedral, the canons of the canons became a cathedral chapter. The seat of the bishop was on the Leibnitz fortress outside the diocesan area.

However, Karl stayed in Salzburg most of the time as an advisor to the Archbishop and obtained various privileges for his diocese. Little is known of Karl's economic and political activities. In 1230 he accompanied the archbishop to Italy to meet with the Patriarch of Aquileia and Duke Leopold VI. of Austria to conclude the Peace of Ceprano between the Roman Church and Emperor Friedrich II. The bishop died on December 13 of the same year, presumably no longer in Italy. He was buried in Seckau Cathedral.
