Karl K. Darrow

Karl Kelchner Darrow (born November 25, 1891 in Chicago , † June 7, 1982 in New York City ) was an American physicist and longtime secretary of the American Physical Society .

Life

Darrow graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor's degree in 1911 and a Ph.D. in 1917. with an experimental thesis on thermodynamics with Robert A. Millikan . He then went into industry at Western Electric and in 1925 at Bell Telephone Laboratories , where he worked until his retirement in 1956. In 1924 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society and in 1925 of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . His main task at Bell Laboratories was the information and training of the scientific staff on the latest developments in physical research. He has written a variety of articles, including the Bell System Technical Journal , and several books.

From 1941 to 1967 he was secretary of the American Physical Society . In 1936 Darrow was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society . Since 1964 he was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1960 he received the Karl Taylor Compton Gold Medal from the American Physical Society.
