Karl Kohn (composer)

Karl Kohn (born August 1, 1926 in Vienna ) is an American composer, pianist and music teacher of Austrian origin.

Life

Kohn came to the USA in 1939 when he was thirteen. After the Second World War he studied at Harvard University with Walter Piston , Irving Fine and Randall Thompson . A Fulbright research grant enabled him to stay in Helsinki, and he has also received grants from the Guggenheim, Howard and Mellon foundations. For several years he gave summer courses at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood. From 1950 to 1994 he was Professor of Music at Pomona College . Among his students here were Douglas Leedy , David Noon and Susan Morton Blaustein , privately he taught a. a. Frank Zappa . With his wife Margaret Kohn , he performed works for two pianos, mainly by 20th century composers. As a composer, he mainly emerged with chamber music works.
