Karl Mensing

Karl Mensing (born December 21, 1876 in Koblenz , † January 2, 1953 in Wuppertal ); was a lawyer and member of various bodies of the Confessing Church .

Life

After studying and doing his doctorate in Bonn, Karl Mensing established himself as a lawyer in Wuppertal-Elberfeld. Soon after the First World War he took over more and more tasks in the Evangelical Church of the Old Prussian Union , including as a member of the Synodal Board of the Elberfeld Church District and the Old Prussian General Synod. During the Nazi era he was decisively committed to the Confessing Church. Mensing belonged to the Rhenish Council and Brother Council , the Old Prussian Brother Council, the Constitutional Chamber of the Provisional Management of the German Evangelical Church, the Legal Committee of the Old Prussian Confessing Church and the "Harzburg Circle" of lawyers of the Confessing Church. In 1937 he was temporarily imprisoned for taking part in their theological exams, which were forbidden by the Nazis, and for taking part in decisions made by the Old Prussian Brother Council.

In May 1945 Mensing was one of the members of the newly formed leadership of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland ; he also took an active part in the preparations for the establishment of the EKD . From 1948 to 1953 he was the senior church councilor of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland in Düsseldorf.

Honors

Karl Mensing received an honorary theological doctorate for his services to the Confessing Church and the development of the EKD.
