Karl Otter

Karl Otter (born April 27, 1883 in Sendrowen , Ortelsburg district ; † spring 1945 in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( USPD , SPD ).

Life

Karl Otter was born the son of a miner. His family moved from East Prussia to Bochum , where he attended elementary school and learned his father's profession. From 1899 he worked as a miner in the Ruhr mining industry , was involved in the union and from June 1913 to 1915 was an employee of the miners' association in Bochum. He then took part in the First World War as a soldier , from which he returned in 1917 as a war disabled. From December 1, 1918, he was again employed as an employee (trade union official) in the central office of the Miners' Association in Bochum. He was also a member of the Prussian Mine Safety Commission.

Otter joined the SPD shortly after the turn of the century and was a member of the board of the SPD constituency organization Recklinghausen-Borken from 1909 to 1913. In 1917 he founded the USPD in Bochum, was party secretary and was elected as a member of the Prussian state parliament in February 1921 . From 1922 he was again a member of the majority socialists. He was a member of the state parliament without interruption until the end of the third electoral term in 1932. In parliament he represented constituency 18 (Westphalia-South).

After the National Socialists came to power , Otter was dismissed as a union official in 1933. A year later he was arrested and subsequently interned in a concentration camp. In August 1944 he was arrested again and taken to Sachsenhausen concentration camp . From there he was transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where he died in the spring of 1945.
