Karl Philipp Heinrich Rode

Karl Philipp Heinrich Rode (born June 1, 1818 in Magdeburg , † June 7, 1886 in Berlin ) was royal Prussian major general and most recently commander of the core division of the Baltic Sea fleet.

His parents were Lieutenant Colonel of the Artillery Bernhard Ludwig Rode (* February 24, 1777; † July 25, 1848) and his wife Friederike Dorothea von Pöppinghaus (* February 5, 1790; † December 26, 1858).

Life

He attended the pedagogy in Halle and after graduating went into Prussian service. On October 1, 1835, he was a gunner in the 8th Company of the 3rd Artillery Brigade. From 1836 to 1839 he was posted to the United Artillery and Engineering School . During this time he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on August 15, 1837, initially aggregated as Seconde-Lieutenant on September 21, 1838 and assigned a patent on October 4, 1838.

On his return he was appointed artillery officer on January 7, 1840. From March 1, 1843 to March 31, 1845 he was able to take part in the lectures at the building school and the industrial institute in Berlin. On April 1, 1845, he was posted to the Artillery Revision Commission. On March 14, 1846 he was aggregated into the 3rd Artillery Brigade and used there in the fireworks department. He was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on April 4, 1850 and transferred to the Marine Corps as leader of the 2nd Company. There he was promoted to captain on April 17, 1852 and appointed chief of the 2nd company of the sea battalion on May 13, 1852. Promoted to major on January 26, 1857, he became leader of the naval reserve and naval service. Leaving his position as it was, he was made lieutenant colonel on October 18, 1861, with the sea battalion à la suite . On March 17, 1863, he was given the character of a colonel and then on April 14, he became the commander of the base division of the Baltic Sea fleet, in addition to which he remained à la suite of the sea battalion. On January 22, 1865 he received the Knight's Cross of the House Order of Hohenzollern and on January 1, 1867 also the patent as a colonel. On January 18, 1871, he was given the status of major general before he was put up for retirement on February 27, 1872 . Still on 16 September 1879 he was awarded the Red Eagle 2nd Class with oak leaves . He died in Berlin on June 7, 1886.

His commander, Major Scherbeing, wrote in his assessment in 1847: This officer makes himself noticeable through his modest behavior, good moral conduct, eagerness to serve, diligence, prudence and reliability and is very useful to the fireworks laboratory thanks to the technical knowledge he acquired in the trade institute.
