Karl Pietsch (Romanist)

Karl Pietsch (born January 4, 1860 in Stettin ; † April 1, 1930 ibid) was a German Romanist and Hispanist who worked in the USA.

life and work

Carl Pietsch studied in Berlin (1879–1882), Florence (1882–1884) and Halle a. S. and received his doctorate there in 1887 with contributions to the doctrine of the old French relative (Halle 1888). He then went to the United States and was a library assistant at the Newberry Library in Chicago from 1890 to 1896 . From 1896 to 1900 he was first an instructor, then assistant professor for Romance languages at the University of Chicago and, after a year of study at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris, became associate professor in 1901 and full professor of Romance philology in 1910. After his retirement in 1925, he returned to Stettin. Pietsch was a corresponding member of the Spanish Academy from 1910.
