Karl Richter (industrialist)

Karl Richter (born February 26, 1829 in Malapane , † August 27, 1893 in Heringsdorf ) was a coal and steel industrialist. He was general director of the United Königs- and Laurahütte in Upper Silesia and an influential industrial representative.

Life

Richter attended high school in Opole . He then studied in Breslau and Berlin . He completed an apprenticeship for mining and metallurgy and then entered the Prussian civil service. He rose to head the state-owned Königshütte. In 1864 he changed to the director of the Laurahütte, which was owned by Count Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck . He managed to steer the Laurahütte successfully through difficult economic times. On his advice, Henckel von Donnersmarck also acquired the Königshütte in 1869. Richter subsequently successfully restructured them. On his advice, the count approved the union of the Königs- and Laurahütte and the establishment of a stock corporation. The United Königs- und Laurahütte AG was founded in 1871. Richter became the company's general manager and held this position until his death. During his time, the company rose to become one of the most important mining industrial companies with more than 21,000 employees (1904) and numerous business units.

Richter also played an important role in industrial associations. He was a representative of protective tariff policy . After the association of German iron and steel industrialists was founded in 1874, Richter was elected its first chairman. He also retained this position until his death. He was also a member of the Reichstag between 1878 and 1881 . He belonged to the Free Conservative Party . Between 1881 and 1885 he was also chairman of the Central Association of German Industrialists . In 1887 he played a key role in founding the Upper Silesian Rolling Mills Association, of which he was also chairman from 1887 to 1893.
