Karl Samuda

Karl Samuda (born February 8, 1942 in Kingston ) is a Jamaican politician ( JLP , PNP ). He was Jamaica's Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce from September 2007 to June 2011 .

Life

Samuda attended Ardenne High School, then studied at the University of Ottawa and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce. He then worked as an employee at Alcan Jamaica Ltd. and Industrial Gases Ltd. active. He is married and has three children.

In the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) Samuda was from 1985 to 1990 Deputy General Secretary ( Deputy General Secretary ). In 1990 he was expelled from the JLP and joined the People's National Party (PNP). He moved back to the JLP in 1997 and was general secretary of the party from 2005 to 2011.

The House of Representatives Samuda was first elected in 1980 as a candidate of the JLP in the constituency of St. Andrew Northwestern. In 1989 he won for the JLP in the constituency of St. Andrew North Central, before moving to the PNP less than two years later. In the parliamentary elections in 1993, he defended his seat in the House of Representatives with a narrow majority in the same constituency - this time as a PNP candidate. He returned to the JLP before the 1997 election and was re-elected, as he did in the following election in 2002.

He was 1980-1986 Parliamentary Secretary ( Parliamentary Secretary ) and Minister of State ( Minister of State ), first in health, later in the Industry and Commerce Ministry. Samuda was from 1983 to 1990 in the Electoral Advisory Committee and later became a member of the Electoral Commission .

In the general election on September 3, 2007, he was able to win St. Andrew North Central again. The JLP won the majority in this election and formed the new government. Samuda was appointed Minister of Industry and Trade. He was sworn in on September 14, 2007. He resigned as part of a cabinet reshuffle at the end of June 2011, and was succeeded by Christopher Tufton , who had previously headed the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Samuda was offered the Ministry of Energy and Mining, but turned it down and stayed as a simple MP in the House of Representatives. In the election on December 29, 2011, he won again in the constituency of St. Andrew North Central and thus managed to return to the House of Representatives. Since January 19, 2012, he has been the opposition spokesman for transport policy and infrastructure development.
