Christopher Tufton

Christopher Charles Tufton is a Jamaican politician with the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP). He was Jamaica's Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries from September 2007 to June 2011 and Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce from July 2011 to January 2012 . Since November 2010 he has been the Deputy Leader of the Jamaica Labor Party.

Life

Tufton studied at the University of the West Indies (UWI), the School of Business at Georgia State University in the USA and at the Business School of the University of Manchester in Great Britain , where he received his doctorate in 2002 ( Doctorate in Business Administration ( DBA)). From 2003 to 2006 he was President of G2K , since then he has been working as a business consultant and lecturer at the UWI in Mona, Department for Management Studies. Tufton has been married since 1994 and has three children.

Tufton was named an opposition senator on June 24, 2005 . In the general election on September 3, 2007, Tufton was elected to the House of Representatives as a candidate for the Jamaica Labor Party for the constituency of South West St. Elizabeth . After the election victory in this election, the JLP formed the new government, Tufton was appointed to the government by Prime Minister Bruce Golding and sworn in as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries on September 14th. On November 14, 2010, he was elected to succeed Horace Chang as deputy JLP party chairman for Area Council 4 (West Jamaica).

As part of a cabinet reshuffle announced at the end of June 2011, Tufton took over the Ministry of Industry and Commerce on July 1, 2011 from the outgoing Karl Samuda , and Robert Montague was appointed as the new Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries .

After the electoral defeat of the JLP in the general election on December 29, 2011, Tufton resigned from the ministerial office on January 6, 2012, his successor as Minister of Industry and Trade was Anthony Hylton of the People's National Party . Tufton himself narrowly missed re-election in his constituency with 9,440 to 9,453 votes, but was reappointed Senator and has been the opposition's foreign policy spokesman since January 19, 2012.
