Karl Schaffran

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Schaffran (* 1878 in Freystadt ; † 1945 in Danzig-Sopot ) was a German shipbuilding engineer who has made a name for himself as a specialist in the design, testing and design as well as in the design and construction of ship propellers .

Teaching and study and work

Schaffran was born in Freystadt in 1878 and completed an internship at the Imperial Shipyard in Gdansk after attending school . While studying shipbuilding and marine engineering at the Technical University of Charlottenburg, he completed the preliminary diploma examination as well as the main diploma examination with distinction.

After working in Gdansk and Bremen , he was appointed head of department at the Berlin Research Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Shipbuilding . Here he investigated the hydrodynamic conditions on seaplanes and ships. He carried out the first systematic propeller tests on highly loaded propellers. Schaffran received his doctorate in engineering after the First World War .

Own institute

In Hamburg-Altona he founded his own "Scientific Technical Institute for Economic Ship Propulsion" and examined ship propulsion using a holistic approach with a focus on propellers. Important results were published in his book "Systematic Tests with Standard Screw Model". The "Schaffran diagrams for the propeller design", based on which he also designed and cast propellers, also originate from this time. From this the "Schaffran Propeller Society" developed, which found a new home in 1957 in Lübeck.

In 1939 he was appointed director of the Danzig shipyard, which he successfully managed. In 1945 Schaffran died in Danzig-Sopot.
