Life

From 1950 to 1954, Sommer attended an elementary school in Ludwigshafen, then the mathematical and natural science high school in Ludwigshafen, where he obtained the general university entrance qualification in 1963 . This was followed by a degree in process engineering with a specialization in physics at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, later University of Karlsruhe (TH), today Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), which he completed in 1968 with the main diploma examination. This was followed by an activity as a doctoral student and research assistant at the Institute for Mechanical Process Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe. In 1974 he did his doctorate with Hans Rumpf as main referee and Marcel Loncin as co-referee with the dissertation “Physical processes in conching”.
