Leo Appelt (born May 26, 1997 in Hanover ) is a former German cyclist .

Athletic career

In 2013, Leo Appelt won a gold medal in the road race and a silver medal in the individual time trial at the European Summer Youth Olympic Festival in Utrecht . The following year he won two stages of the road race Sint-Martinusprijs Kontich for juniors, one of them as a team time trial with Jasper Frahm , Marcel Franz , Marc Jurczyk , Robert Hunter and Moritz Malcharek and was also German junior champion in the individual pursuit on the track . In 2015 he won a stage as well as the overall ranking of the Lower Saxony Tour , on the track he was again junior champion in the pursuit.

In August 2015, Appelt became Junior World Champion in the single pursuit at the Junior Track World Championships in Astana , and a few weeks later he won the title of Junior World Time Trial Champion at the World Road Championships in Richmond .

Appelt was also successful in cyclo-cross races, and in 2013 he became youth champion in this discipline.

With his move to the U23 age group, Appelt joined the US BMC Development Team , the junior team of the UCI World Team BMC Racing Team . For the 2018 season he moved to LKT Team Brandenburg , which he left on March 1, 2019 and ended his cycling career.

In 2015 Leo Appelt was voted German junior cyclist of the year .
