Karl Strehl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Wilhelm Andreas Strehl (born April 30, 1864 in Bayreuth ; † June 14, 1940 in Hof ) was a German physicist and optician.

In his main work Theory of the Telescope on the Basis of Diffraction of Light , he described the relationships and the meaning of the brightness in the first diffraction ring and formulated a method for calculating the definition brightness. The definition brightness describes the ratio of the theoretically maximum possible intensity of the central diffraction disk of a perfect optic to the intensity of the central diffraction disk of a real existing optic when imaging a point-like object. According to Karl Strehl, the definition brightness is called the Strehl number or Strehl ratio today.
