Karl Weiß (entomologist)

Karl Weiß (born June 17, 1924 ; † December 10, 2018 in Buckenhof near Erlangen ) was a German entomologist and beekeeper .

Life

Karl Weiß, whose grandfather and father had already been a beekeeper, studied zoology and received his doctorate at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen with a thesis on the learning behavior of bees and wasps. He then worked as a scholarship holder at the Bavarian State Institute for Beekeeping in Erlangen. He then looked after the test apiary at the fruit growing research institute in Jork for two years . In 1954 he returned to Erlangen and stayed at the state institute until his retirement in 1986. Under his leadership, the "Erlanger Beute" was developed as a modern booty for free standing. He was the author of the standard works The Weekend Beekeeper and Bees and Beehives and numerous scientific publications.
