Karlheinz Hottes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karlheinz Hottes (* 1925 ; † 2001 ) was a German geographer and from 1965 to 1995 professor at the Geographical Institute of the Ruhr University Bochum (retired in 2001). With his work on the geography of telecommunications and industry, Hottes recognized the important role of telecommunications for the industrial development of economic centers in the 20th century as early as the 1960s and 1970s. In addition, Hottes was a member of several commissions (industrial geography, geography of telecommunications) in the International Geographical Union .

Together with his French colleagues (Christian Verlaque, Henry Bakis) he founded the "Telecommunications and Communication" working group within the International Geographical Union in 1984. In addition, Hottes knew how to link the field of telecommunications geography with other subject areas such as industrial geography, telemantics and geoinformatics at various conferences, thus defining common and future-oriented research fields and generating scientific synergies. The conferences in Koblenz (1986), The Hague (1996), Leipzig (1998, 2001) and Stuttgart (2000) should be mentioned.
