The Karlssteg is a 136.5 meter long pedestrian bridge with a tensioning strap construction in Freiburg im Breisgau . A concrete strip only 25 cm thick with 60 sagging tendons inside leads from Karlsplatz to the city garden . At high temperatures the strap can sag up to 40 cm. Construction began in September 1969, the pillars were already in place in January 1970 and in June for the 850th anniversary of the city, the Karlssteg - designed by the engineer H. Nehse - was opened to traffic as the first bridge of its kind in Germany. In the same year, the Mozart, Hermann and Schwabentorsteg were opened, but they are less spectacular and lead across Mozartstrasse and Schlossbergring.

Karlssteg with warning sign in winter

At the opening, a four-ton construction vehicle stood next to Mayor Eugen Keidel on the DM 664,000  bridge to demonstrate its load-bearing capacity. Problems are caused by the synthetic resin covering on the bridge, which separates from the concrete due to its own movement and has had to be renovated several times in recent years. The surface also does not tolerate road salt . Therefore, in snow and ice, barriers with warning signs should prevent pedestrians from entering the bridge. Initially, the installation of a heating system was discussed, but not implemented due to the costs.

This bridge played a role in a copyright dispute in 2006. In 1990 the photographer Karl-Heinz Raach photographed the Freiburg Minster with the Karlssteg in the foreground. This photo was published as a postcard and in a Freiburg illustrated book. From the same point of view, the photo for a calendar of the Volksbank Freiburg for the year 2003 was recreated by another professional photographer. Raach had sued against this and was right in the second instance.
