history

Former main building in Franziskanerstraße

On December 30, 1866, the Freiburger Gewerbebank was founded as a cooperative with unlimited liability and entered in the cooperative register on January 2, 1871.

Due to the new cooperative law, from 1889 the membership books were no longer kept alphabetically, but according to the order in which they were entered. At the general assembly in 1906, women were also present for the first time. In the summer of the same year, the company moved into the newly constructed building on Franziskanerstraße. In 1907 a new high was reached with 5790 members. In 1909 the conversion from unlimited to limited liability takes place.

Because of the war, there was no celebration for the 50th anniversary of the commercial bank on March 23, 1917, in favor of a donation to the impoverished local craft. In 1918, 19 million marks were donated to war bonds. On May 9, 1924, the closing paper mark balance for December 31, 1923 was drawn up, as was the opening gold mark balance for January 1, 1924. The old shares were converted from 1 million paper marks to one gold mark. On February 21, 1927, instead of the general assembly, a meeting of representatives was convened on the basis of the cooperative law. In Todtnau, the commercial bank sets up a branch. On February 27, 1928, the Freiburger Gewerbebank merged with the savings and advance payment bank Todtnau.

Board member Fritz Fischer was relieved of his office on March 19, 1934 "for incorrect behavior outside of the office". In order to compensate for the deficit of 350,000 RM, the board of directors and the supervisory board form a "guarantee association"; a 20 percent depreciation of the member's shares is made. The association grants a grant of RM 194,000. Helmut Heberle is appointed as renovator.

In the supervisory board meeting on September 12, 1934, the establishment of a paying office in the slaughterhouse was discussed. The work space rented to the bank by the slaughterhouse administration is occupied on December 21, 1937. On April 30, 1942, the general assembly refused to accept the association's request to rename the commercial bank Volksbank. The member's share of 1000 RM will be reduced to 500 RM in order to facilitate entry into the cooperative.

By order of the Reich Ministry of Economics, the Landesbank für Haus- und Grundbesitz eGmbH in Karlsruhe with its branches in Freiburg and Pforzheim was transferred to the Freiburg commercial bank on May 31, 1943. The Todtnau branch will be closed.

On June 5, 1946, the French military government nominated new supervisory boards. As a result of the currency reform, the bank's equity shrank on June 20, 1948 at a ratio of 10: 1. Because of the gigantic administrative effort in the course of the currency reform, the first general assembly after the war does not take place until September 29, 1952.

In 1956, the bank building on Franziskanerstraße was rebuilt, including a safe and a modern counter. The first branch after the Second World War opens in Schönau in the Black Forest on August 24, 1959. The 100th anniversary of the Freiburger Gewerbebank Volksbank is celebrated on a grand scale in 1966.

In 1972 the Freiburger Gewerbebank Volksbank merged with Volksbank St. Blasien. 1973 it merges with Raiffeisenbank Freiburg and the bank is renamed Volksbank Freiburg. On May 20, 1974, the bank moved into the newly constructed building at the main train station with an open house. The building was created by the Swiss architects Suter + Suter based on the design by Rainer Fleischhauer. In 2000 the company merged with the Raiffeisenbank Südlicher Schwarzwald, in 2002 with the Kaiserstühler Volksbank and in 2003 with the Volksbank Hochschwarzwald. The 140th anniversary was celebrated in 2007. After it was clarified in 2015 that the building on Bismarckallee is not a monument, plans for demolition and new construction were in progress. The move to the former Dresdner / Commerzbank building took place in mid-September 2017. The demolition took place in 2017 and 2018; The new building began in autumn 2018. A construction period of two and a half to three years is expected. The topping-out ceremony was held at the end of 2019, eight weeks before the planned time. The future Volksbank headquarters, the design of which was presented in summer 2016, consists of parts of different heights and is around 64 meters high at the highest point. The responsible architect is Hadi Teherani , who is also the creator of the Cologne crane houses and the dancing towers in Hamburg. In February 2020, the Volksbank announced that it would only use half of the space in the new building itself. Interested parties have already been found for the rest. Completion is expected in mid-2021.
