Karner von Gmünd

The Karner von Gmünd in Carinthia stands northeast of the parish church . The two-storey Romanesque rotunda, first mentioned in a document in 1376, dates from the second half of the 12th century. A Michael's chapel was housed on the upper floor. The irregular heptagonal room has a star- shaped vault drawn down deeply , the figurative consoles only come just above the floor. The carved keystone shows the Christ Lamb .

The Michaelskapelle is equipped with frescoes from around 1370 on the walls and on two stitch caps , which show the influence of Northern Italy and Friuli.

In the middle above the former apse, Christ as Pantocrator with a strip of writing with the year 1370, the Annunciation and Marriage of Mary , Saint Dorothea , an unknown saint and a kneeling donor couple are depicted.

On the west wall a Madonna, the Saints Agnes and Margaret, the offering in the temple , procession and adoration of the Magi , the birth of Christ and the adoration of the shepherds are depicted. The east wall shows John the Baptist , Saint Stephen , Mary in hope and a fragment of a male donor. The northeastern stitch cap is painted with a crucifixion group and Saint Barbara. The lower zone consists of crosses of the Apostles over a painted curtain.

The ossuary below was painted around 1400. The frescoes are in poor condition and show a Last Judgment and a protective mantle Madonna .
