Karol Zając

Karol Zając (born May 19, 1913 in Czarny Dunajec , † May 18, 1965 ) was a Polish ski racer . Zając was one of the best skiers in his country in the 1930s.

In 1934 he was the first Polish runner-up in the downhill. Two years later he took part in the Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In the combined ranking he came in 28th place and was the second best of the Polish team.

Zając had his strongest year in 1938. He won the only Polish championship of his career in the downhill and came second in both slalom and combination. In the same year he took part in the Alpine World Ski Championships in Engelberg . His best result there was in the downhill run, 23rd.

At the beginning of 1940 he fled on skis across the Tatra Mountains to Hungary and further to the west, where he joined Polish army units. After the end of the war he did not return to Poland.
