The Karolin (also Karlin or Carolin ) was the name of various gold coins .

Bavarian Karolin

The Karolin was a Bavarian gold coin that was introduced under Elector Karl Albert in 1726 based on the model of the French Louis d'or . The value was given as 3 gold florins and 10 florins respectively. On the Reichsmünztag of 1738 the value was set at 8 guilders, 5 kreuzers. However, the value rose to 11 guilders in 1763 during the Seven Years' War .

Palatine Karolin

The Karolin was an Electorate of the Palatinate , South German since 1740 gold coin of 3 gold gulden = 11 gulden. . In Hessen-Darmstadt, Kurköln, Electoral Palatinate and Württemberg, these coins were minted based on the model of the Bavarian Karolin.

Swedish Carolin

The Carolin was also the name of various Swedish gold and silver coins.

For the first time, Swedish Carolin were used as a gold coin under Charles IX. (1604-1611) minted. The value was 16 marks or 4 riksdalers .

The name Carolin was later used for a Swedish silver coin of originally 2 marks or 16 ore , later 1.3 marks.

These coins were made under King Charles XI. (1660–1697) and Charles XII. (1697-1718) made from 1664 to 1754. The silver Carolin from the reign of King Adolph Friedrich (1751–1771) was also known as Adolphin.

The Carolin was also a Swedish gold coin worth 10 francs or 8.1 marks. From 1868 to 1872 Sweden shaped under Charles XV. these gold coins according to the specifications of the Latin Monetary Union .

With the founding of the Scandinavian Coin Union (also called Nordic Coin Union) on December 18, 1872, the production of the Carolin ended.
