Baron Karoline Sophie von Freystedt (* February 2, 1775 in Karlsruhe , † April 29, 1862 ibid) was lady-in-waiting of the Margravine Amalie von Baden . She was a granddaughter of the first Grand Duke Karl Friedrich from an illegitimate sideline.

Origin, marriage and offspring

Karoline was the eldest daughter of Carl Friedrich Hermann von Freystedt and Sofie Götz. She was a granddaughter of Grand Duke Karl Friedrich von Baden who had given his illegitimate son the title of Freystedt . She did not marry and had no offspring.

Life

In 1801, Karoline entered the service of the then Hereditary Princess and later Margravine Amalie von Baden. She was not only a lady-in-waiting, but also a youth playmate for the margravine's daughters, who went down in history as Europe's mother-in-law . Her notes on life at the Baden court, memories from court life between 1801 and 1832, which brought Baden's rise from margraviate to grand duchy, are considered an important source for historiography. Since daughters of the margravine u. a. were married to the Tsar of Russia, the King of Sweden and the King of Bavaria and Napoleon's adoptive daughter Stéphanie de Beauharnais became Amalie 's daughter -in-law, the records give a picture of contemporary history - far beyond Baden.

After the death of Margravine Amalie in 1832, Karoline lived in isolation in Karlsruhe, where she is remembered as the benefactress of the poor.
