Karolinelund is a former amusement park on the northern outskirts of Aalborg .

history

Originally the area was called "Caroline Lund" after Princess Caroline (1793-1881) and was inaugurated in 1824 as a recreation park for the city's officers. In the 1840s, the park also gained popularity among the population.

In 1946 the brothers Volmer and Carl Lind bought the site and opened their Karolinelund theme park on April 20, 1947. From the 1970s to 2005 the park was called "Tivoliland". The park remained in the possession of the Lind family until it was sold in 2006 to Torben Pedersen, the owner of the revue "Cirkusrevyen" and various rides in Dyrehavsbakken . Under his direction it was renamed “Tivoli Karolinelund”, but after only one season and a minus of 2.6 million kroner (approx. 350,000 euros) and only 112,000 visitors, it was sold to Aalborg Municipality on January 27, 2007 .

The municipality continued to run Karolinelund under its original name as a city park with partially free admission and paid attractions. Only in the high season from the end of June to the beginning of August is a low entrance fee required. A so-called “Turbånd”, which allows unlimited access, can also be purchased for the use of the attractions.

Karolinelund shares the management and board of directors with the Aalborg Zoo, which is also part of the municipality. Both institutions appear independently.

The future of the park is politically controversial, as it is currently not economically self-sustaining and in the 2010 season it ran into a deficit of an estimated 3 to 4 million crowns. Venstre , the Conservative Folkeparti and the Socialistisk Folkeparti want to sell the attractions and continue the area only as an event site and green area. Proponents of the park oppose that the losses caused by the operation of the park are lower than the direct and indirect follow-up costs of a closure. The park was closed for the winter break on September 4, 2010. On October 6, 2010, however, all applicants for a takeover were rejected because the responsible committee feared that the park would have to be subsidized by the public sector in the future. In the future, the site is to be converted into a city park. The buildings are currently still standing, but the rides - such as the three roller coasters - have since been dismantled.
