Karolyn Grimes (born July 4, 1940 in Hollywood , California ) is a former American child actress.

life and career

Karolyn Grimes grew up in Los Angeles and got into the acting business through her mother. She made her film debut at the age of five. She had her best-known appearance in 1946 in the Christmas classic Isn't life beautiful? as Zuzu Bailey, the youngest daughter of George Bailey, played by James Stewart . In the film she utters the famous phrase "And every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings " ( Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings ). With Every Woman Needs an Angel she appeared in another Christmas film the following year alongside Cary Grant , Loretta Young and David Niven . In 1950 she had another supporting role in the western Rio Grande by John Ford as a little girl who is kidnapped by Indians along with other children. She appeared in a total of 16 movies until 1952, after which she was seen in two television productions.

Karolyn Grimes suffered many blows of fate in her later life. Her mother died of dementia early when Karolyn was 12 and her father died in a car accident just under three years later. She then had to move to Missouri to live with her aunt and uncle, whom she describes as religious fanatics. This move also ended her career in Hollywood. She later attended the University of Central Missouri and then worked as a medical technician. Grimes is the mother of five children and two stepchildren. Her first husband died in a hunting accident, her 18-year-old son committed suicide in 1989, and her second husband died of cancer in 1994.

From the 1980s onwards, Isn't Life Beautiful? so much that she was able to solve her financial difficulties with numerous public appearances. She appears as a frequent guest at fan festivals and events where the film is shown. Ironically, she had never seen the film until she was 40.
