The Karrasburg is a medieval moated castle and at the same time the name of the municipal museum of Coswig , which is located northwest of Dresden in the Saxon district of Meißen .

The name of the castle goes back to its builder, the Knights of Karras .

history

Around 1420 the knight family of the Karrasse, one of the richest noble families in the Electorate of Saxony , became the feudal lords of Coswig. In the 15th century, the Karrasse in Coswig lived in a castle surrounded by a wall and a moat. Nickel von Karras had today's Old Church built for 750 Rhenish guilders in 1496 . Their entrance portal is adorned with the coats of arms of those of Karras and von Pöllnitz .

In 1556, after Hans and Georg Karras sold the property to Elector August I for 15,169 guilders, 11 groschen and 10 pfennigs, the mansion was converted into a forester's house, where the royal foresters lived. A year later P. Körner bought the electoral hunting lodge.

Further sales and changes of ownership followed. In 1577 the outbuilding with the moat was sold for 1,000 guilders. Until the forester moved to Kreyern in 1679, the electoral hunters came from this family.

In 1688, the sale to Martin Schwedler resulted in a change of ownership. In 1706 the property went to Hanns Christoph Körner. 20 years later in 1726 a fire broke out on the estate.

The district judge of the Moritzburg office , Christian Schubert, acquired the renovated building and the property in 1796. In 1828 he sold the property and part of the land for 4,200 Thaler to Dr. med. Heidenreich from Radeburg . In 1836 the property was inherited by his wife Friederike Luise Heidenreich. She sold it to Dr. Johann Michael Weise. One year later, Weise sold the property to Karl Gottfried August Thienemann for 5,150 Thaler. Carl August Wilhelm Thienemann, Karl's son, inherited the property after his father's death in 1873. Due to the intended letting, the house was converted and expanded. The current villa was built in 1897, for which the old house had to be demolished. The farm buildings on both sides were converted for residential purposes. Scant remnants of the old defensive walls are still there. In 1910, the Thienemann property, including the Karrasburg, was assigned to Kirchstrasse. In 1919 Thienemann sold part of his property. The property with its park passed into the ownership of the Kötitzer leather cloth and oilcloth works in 1922. In 1947 the Wittke family registered a business for bag production.

In 1904 the "Association for Folklore and Local History Coswig and Surroundings" was founded, which dealt with the chronicle of the region and began with the collection of folklore objects as well as prehistoric and early historical finds. In 1937, the association handed the collection over to the local authorities, which first exhibited it in the meeting room of what was then the Kötitz town hall. In 1951 the hall had to be cleared and the museum property was temporarily housed in the Coswig schoolhouse. The city council took over the villa in 1952 and set up a youth home in it. At the end of the 1950s, the building was given to VEG Nieschütz for use. The local history museum was set up in 1957 in the farm building / stable of the Karrasse knight family, which is located directly next to the Karrasburg. Today it is a restaurant. In 1961 the villa became a dormitory for the gardening apprentices and received an extension. The former stable building had to be closed in 1983 due to dilapidation. Nine years later, the museum's holdings were moved to the basement of the former polyclinic. In 1993 the local council decided to renovate the Karrasburg as a historical monument and to use it by the school authorities and the museum. The construction project was funded by the federal-state program “Urban Renewal”. After the renovation of the Karrasburg from 1993 to 1996, the Karrasburg was handed over to the Coswig Museum for use. In October 1996 it was inaugurated as the new museum of the city of Coswig. After the construction of the new Coswig town hall, the museum received the upper floor of the Karrasburg for use. In December 2000 the museum was reopened after a renovation with the extended permanent exhibition on two floors.

Building description

Only the old retaining walls of the former moated castle are still clearly visible today. In the vernacular there are reports of underground passages from the Karrasburg to the old church and even to Scharfenberg . During renovations in earlier years, only vaults were found, which could also have served as the basement of the building.

Remarks
