Karsten Vogel

Karsten Vogel (born January 11, 1943 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish jazz and fusion saxophonist and composer.

Live and act

Vogel played the saxophone from the age of fourteen. He studied Danish literature and linguistics at the University of Copenhagen , which he graduated with an MA in 1968 . During his studies he played in the Brødrene Vogels Kvartet founded with his brother , which was awarded in 1964. He also recorded with Hugh Steinmetz and from 1967 to 1969 belonged to the Cadentia Nova Danica Free Jazz founded by John Tchicai . He also founded the blues rock and later fusion band Burnin Red Ivanhoe in 1967 , from which the band Secret Oyster emerged in 1972 and toured with Captain Beefheart , Herbie Hancock , Shakti and Weather Report .

From 1977 he appeared with his Birds of Beauty and other solo projects, the Danish actor Frits Helmuth, the bands of Robin Taylor and with L. Subramaniam . Since 2005 he has led the VogelSteinmetzQuartet with Hugh Steinmetz .

Vogel composed for the DR Radiojazz Band and the Danish National Chamber Orchestra , but also the score for the feature film Er I bange, Er du grønlænder .
