The Charterhouse of Valldemossa is a former monastery of the Carthusian Order in Valldemossa on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca .

history

In 1399, the King of Aragon, Martin I , founded the Real Cartuja de Jesús de Nazaret de Valldemossa monastery of the Order of the Carthusians on the foundation walls of an Alcázar in Valldemossa , which today as the Charterhouse of Valldemossa is one of the most famous sights on the island of Mallorca.

Most of today's monastery buildings date from the 18th century. The monastery was secularized in 1835 , the monks were expelled and the nine monastery cells were sold individually. These are still privately owned. Today, individual cells and rooms of the monastery house different museums.

The neoclassical church, which was built from 1751 to 1812, the old pharmacy of the Carthusian monastery with apothecary vessels from the 17th and 18th centuries, the library, the audience hall with the prior's chair , as well as cells No. 2 and No. 4, which were inhabited by George Sand and Frédéric Chopin in the winter of 1838/39.

There are “ relics ” such as a strand of Chopin's hair, his death mask, Sand's book manuscript for “Un Hiver à Majorque” ( A Winter in Mallorca ) and the Pleyel piano used by Chopin and brought back with great effort from France has composed some of his preludes .

There is also a printing house founded in 1579 with a printing machine from 1662. Another section of the museum is dedicated to Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria-Tuscany , who lived in Mallorca for a long time and who wrote a geographical work that is still important today, entitled The Balearic Islands Described in Words and Pictures .
