Kartographia Winterthur was a map publisher that existed from 1842 to 1924 and was based in Winterthur .

history

The publisher was founded in 1842 as Joh. Wurster & Comp. founded after its founder Johann Ulrich Wurster (1814–1880). In addition to the founder, important stakeholders in the company were Jakob Melchior Ziegler (1801–1883), Johann Randegger (1830–1900) and Jakob Schlumpf (1857–1916). The company changed its name several times in the course of its existence, so from 1863 it acted as Wurster, Randegger & Cie. , from 1890 as the Topographische Anstalt J. Schlumpf , before the publishing house adopted its last name in 1906.

A well-known cartographer who worked for the publishing house was Fridolin Becker . The publisher was known for the consistent application of color theory.

When the publisher finally went bankrupt in 1924, it was taken over by Orell Füssli- Verlag, which built up its cartographic department. A large part of the estate is now in the Winterthur libraries .
