The Übigau barracks was a barracks in the Übigau district of Dresden . The barracks and some of the remaining buildings are now a listed building.

The barracks are located in the northwest of Dresden in the Übigau district. It is bounded by Washingtonstrasse (S73) (west), Scharfenberger Strasse (north), Klingerstrasse (east) and Werftstrasse (south).

history

In the course of the development of civil and military aviation, an airship barracks was built in Übigau in 1913/1914 . During the First World War , communications soldiers were trained in a telegraph battalion. Later the barracks was the location of the news department 4. In the years 1933 and 1934 the news department grew strongly by volunteers. However, the number of staff was reduced as early as 1935, as staff of one company size were given to an Air Force intelligence company.

With the first wave of mobilization in 1936, the intelligence department for the 4th infantry division , the intelligence replacement department 4 for the reserve army and the fixed radio station in Dresden were set up here. In May 1945, with the invasion of the Red Army, a Soviet pioneer unit, the 68th Independent Pontoon Bridge Regiment, which belonged to the 1st Guards Armored Army of the Red Army, moved into the barracks. After the Soviet troops withdrew in the spring of 1993, the barracks were very neglected. After the Soviet troops withdrew in the spring of 1993, the barracks were very neglected. In August 1993 the Ministry of Finance commissioned the real estate company of Landesbank Sachsen to market the site, and in 1997 the Chemnitz Regional Finance Office took over the sale. In the following years, the entire remaining area was sold to Delta AG Dresden and converted commercially.

Redesign by 2017

A fire station was built on the former barracks site with around 90,000 m², and a location for the German Red Cross on Klingerstraße with around 27,000 m². From 2001 the remaining areas with the listed buildings were bought and developed by a construction company. A garden center was built on the front part. Another area of the property was used for the expansion of the Dresden-Übigau fire station. A fire and disaster control center with a control center was built on the Scharfenberger Strasse side of the property.

Redesign since 2017

The other part with four barracks buildings and a usable area of approx. 16,900 m² was originally intended to be converted into a senior citizens' residential complex. However, due to problems in financing and the changed requirements for living space, this concept was not implemented. The majority of the barracks buildings along Klingerstrasse were therefore empty and left to decay. At the end of 2013, the first clearing work began on the property. In the course of this, a large part of the trees and bushes that had grown were removed, thus creating freedom to build. However, construction did not start.

Uebigau shipyard

Under the project name Werftquartier Übigau, Columbus Dresden GmbH has been building four new buildings on the western part of the property since 2017. A total of 94 condominiums are to be built. The company specifies the planned apartment sizes as 53 m² (2-room apartment) to 113 m² (5-room apartment). An underground car park is also planned. After examination by the Office for Monument Protection, the old riding arena was allowed to be demolished. Investigations had shown that the building had deteriorated so badly that “the building could no longer be used while maintaining its monumental status”. With the demolition, the last remnants of a striking tower also disappeared, which was often incorrectly described as belonging to the former officers' mess of the Red Army.

Chestnut Park

The Hamburg company GfU Immobilien GmbH & Co. KG is planning to convert the listed buildings in the eastern area of the former barracks into living space. According to the company, 120 condominiums are to be built as part of the “Kastanienpark project”, which will be between 45 m² and 113 m² in size. Construction work has been going on since the beginning of 2017; in the first step, most of the buildings were gutted and windows removed. Also in three of four houses (in one case only partially) roofs were covered and plaster removed.
