The Washington Street is one of George Washington named road in the Dresden districts Übigau , Mickten and Kaditz . As part of the outer city ring, it connects the federal motorway 4 at the junction "Dresden-Neustadt" with the Flügelweg bridge .

course

Washingtonstrasse runs in a north-south direction. It begins at the end of the Flügelwegbrücke and leads through a mainly commercially used building area in the Übigau district. There Werftstraße joins Washingtonstraße, further north the Scharfenberger Straße is crossed.

The street continues in a northerly direction through the Mickten district, where it crosses Overbeckstrasse and the street “An der Flutrinne”. Washingtonstrasse with a 160 meter long bridge over the Kaditz flood channel runs between these two streets . Finally the street leads to the Kaditz district, where it crosses with Lommatzscher / Kötzschenbroder Straße . In its further course, it connects the Elbepark to the federal motorway 4 via an intersection with the Peschelstraße , into which it changes a little later as part of the Dresden-Neustadt motorway junction.

history

The first name of the street was "Am Flugplatz". The name was derived from the Dresden-Kaditz airfield , the eastern boundary of which was the street. When the Flügelwegbrücke was opened, the street was expanded in 1930 and 1931 and was named after the first American President, George Washington , whose birthday was on February 22, 1932 for the 200th time. The street was not renamed during the GDR era.

Plans for the further development and expansion of the road were initially not implemented. Only after reunification did the expansion into a four-lane connecting road between federal highway 6 and the motorway begin . With the opening of the Elbepark shopping center in 1995, the Dresden-Neustadt junction had to be made more efficient in order to cope with the increased volume of traffic. For this purpose, Washingtonstrasse was relocated somewhat to the east in its northern course and extended to Peschelstrasse, where it forms the motorway junction with Kötzschenbroder Strasse. The route was approved on August 14, 1998 after a construction period of around one year. In this context, the bridge was also built over the Kaditz flood channel from 1996 to 1998. The street had previously been led along the bottom of the flood channel and ended on Kötzschenbroder Straße at a roundabout, in the middle of which was the autobahn obelisk .

Technology park

Washingtonstrasse has been expanded to four lanes and has pedestrian and cyclist paths on both sides of the street. The Dresden Transport travel the road between Washington and Flügelwegbrücke Lommatzscher road by bus lines 70 ( Gompitz - industrial area Klotzsche ) and 80 ( Station Klotzsche - Omsewitz ). The Werftstraße, Overbeckstraße and Kaditz industrial park stops are served.

Washington Street is classified as State Highway 73 .

Development

Mainly commercial and industrial buildings can be found on Washingtonstrasse. The Übigau barracks used to be located on the street , the site of which is a listed building. On part of the site, which has not been used since 1993, is the Uebigau station, built in 1996/1997, one of the five fire and rescue stations of the Dresden professional fire brigade .

The buildings of the former Dresden transformer and x- ray plant are now used as the Sigma Technology Park (formerly Siemens Technopark). Allotment gardens and industrial buildings were built on the site of the former airfield . In the 1990s, the housing estate An der Flutrinne was built east of Washingtonstrasse , with further industrial and commercial settlements in the area.
