Parodia subterranea is a species of the genus Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet subterranea comes from Latin , means 'underground' and refers to the shoots of the species that grow almost completely underground.

description

Parodia subterranea grows almost exclusively individually. The dark green to olive green, flattened spherical shoots reach a diameter of up to 6 centimeters. The top of the shoot is woolen in white. A short, thick root beet is formed. The eleven to 13  ribs are subdivided into distinct conical cusps. The areoles, which were initially covered with white wool , later bald. The single strong central spine , rarely up to four, protrudes more or less, is hooked and colored black to yellow-brown. It has lengths of 0.7 to 1.4 centimeters (rarely up to 2 centimeters). The approximately 10 radiant radial spines lie on the surface of the shoot. Usually they are whitish or yellowish, but sometimes some are blackish. The radial spines are 0.5 to 0.8 inches long.

The purple flowers reach lengths of up to 3 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with white to brown hair and black bristles towards the top. The scars are pale yellow. The more or less spherical fruits are red at the base and green towards the top. They are about 0.6 centimeters long and covered with white hair. The fruits contain bag-shaped, black seeds 1.2 millimeters long and 0.5 millimeters wide, which are humped.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Parodia subterranea is common in the Bolivian departments of Chuquisaca and Tarija in the puna vegetation at altitudes of 2500 to 3000 meters.

The first description by Friedrich Ritter was published in 1964. Nomenclatory synonyms are Parodia maassii var. Subterranea (F.Ritter) Krainz (1967) and Bolivicactus subterraneus (F.Ritter) Doweld (2000).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
