The Autobahn Obelisk (alternatively known as the Autobahn Stele ) is a 13.5 meter high stele in the Dresden district of Kaditz . It is located at the Dresden-Neustadt junction of federal highway 4 and is a listed building .

history

In the course of the expansion of the Reichsautobahn in Saxony, the motorway sections Dresden - Chemnitz - Meerane and Dresden - Bautzen were completed in 1937 . The kilometrage began at what is now the Dresden-Neustadt junction. The inauguration of the two motorway sections was made in June 1937 by Adolf Hitler personally. On the occasion of this event, the sculptor Max Grünert erected the motorway obelisk near the junction. In addition to the Dresden city coat of arms, the stele showed the inscription Reichsautobahn 1937 and National Socialist symbols. After the Second World War , the National Socialist elements were removed.

As part of the expansion of the A 4 in 1998, the stele was moved several meters to its current location.

Building

The stele is 13.5 meters high and was made of sandstone . The building stands on a stone plateau in a small green area right next to the motorway. The city arms of Dresden and the word AUTOBAHN have been preserved from the original details .
