The Dresden fire brigade consists of the professional fire brigade and the volunteer fire brigades (also called district fire brigades ) of the Saxon state capital Dresden . Organizationally, it is subordinate to the fire and disaster control office of the state capital. The range of tasks of the Dresden fire brigade includes preventive and defensive fire protection as well as technical assistance.

The professional fire brigade maintains five fire and rescue stations close to the city center , whose deployment areas cover the entire city of Dresden. In addition, there are 21 district fire brigades of the volunteer fire brigade, whose operational area extends around the center, especially in the suburbs. The City Fire Brigade Association represents the interests of fire brigades. Young talent is promoted by the 20 youth fire departments .

In addition to the locations of the Dresden fire brigade, there are various independent works and company fire brigades , such as at Dresden Airport or the Technical University .

history

In 1558, the first fire regulations were issued in Dresden, which, among other things , appointed district masters responsible for the city's quarters . They were responsible for coordinating the extinguishing of fires. With the fire regulations of 1686, training and regular practice for citizens in fire fighting operations were prescribed for the first time, as well as regular inspection of fireplaces and firewalls .

The first organized fire brigade (voluntary Turner fire brigade ) was established in Dresden in 1863. Its commander Gustav Ritz was employed as the city fire director in 1866 . As a result of his efforts, a permanent professional fire brigade corps was founded in 1868 in order to ensure adequate fire protection for the almost 160,000 inhabitants of the city.

At the end of the 19th century there were two main guards - the old town main guard on Annenstrasse and the Neustadt main guard station on Louisenstrasse - as well as five secondary guards. However, the fire in the Kreuzkirche in 1897 showed clear deficits in fire fighting. In the following years, several steam-powered power pumps were procured.

In the course of the motorization of the Dresden fire brigade from 1914, the last horse-drawn equipment, syringe and crew cars were taken out of service in 1916. Until 1922 horses were used for relief services.

The fire brigades during the Nazi era were called fire protection police from 1938 , and from 1933 the professional fire brigades were called fire extinguishing police . The cars delivered from 1940 were painted in the police's fir green ( RAL 6009). In May 1939, Dresden, with almost 630,000 inhabitants , was ranked 8th on the list of the largest German cities , including Vienna . Now there were a total of five fire police guards with their own fire engines.

During the fire in the Old Synagogue on the night of November 9th to 10th, 1938 , the fire brigade merely prevented the fire from spreading to other buildings. The police and fire brigade took the two stars of David , which were wrongly believed to be real gold. A little later, the firefighter Alfred Neugebauer took the Star of David from the fire station and hid it so that it could survive the Nazi regime and the war and later be returned to the Jewish community in Dresden.

In the air raids on February 13 and 14, 1945 , a large part of the extinguishing equipment was destroyed and 107 firefighters were killed.

After the end of the war, the fire brigade had to be rebuilt. With the material available, the service was started in four fire stations. In February 1998 the Übigau fire station was opened as the first new building since 1916.

In October 2012 the new building of the fire station 5 (also called Citywache ) was opened. This was built on a wasteland between Strehlener Strasse and the railway line. In addition to a modern fire and rescue station, the fire protection education center was also built here .

Moving out of the former Neustadt fire station (2008) - The open archway from which the fire engine came shows several scratch marks.

In April 2016, after a two-year construction period, the new fire station 1 in Albertstadt was put into operation as a replacement for the Dresden-Neustadt fire station that had become too small. In addition to the renovation of the listed barracks at Magazinstrasse 1 , a modern vehicle hall was built. The listed Dresden-Neustadt fire station in Louisenstrasse, built between 1912 and 1916, continues to be used by the rescue service.

Dresden was also the venue for various trade fairs and specialist days on the subject of fire protection. In 1880 the 11th German Fire Brigade Day took place in Dresden  , and in 1935 the “Red Rooster” (now Interschutz). The international CTIF Congress came to Dresden in 1984. In 1997 the first trade fair Florian - the trade fair for fire brigade, rescue, fire and disaster protection - took place in Dresden. After being back in Dresden in 2006 and 2014, it has been held annually at Messe Dresden since 2016 .

The 24th Federal Medical Task Force is stationed in Dresden under the leadership of the fire brigade . In addition to the rescue service providers, the German Red Cross, GARD and the Malteser Aid Service, the Johanniter Unfallhilfe is also involved.

As the carrier of the rescue service, the state capital Dresden has transferred the associated rights and obligations to the fire and disaster control office 37. The professional fire brigade, together with the service providers in the rescue service, undertakes emergency rescue in the area of the independent city of Dresden. In addition to the fire brigade, the German Red Cross , the Malteser Aid Service and the GARD company are involved in emergency rescue. In addition to the five fire and rescue stations, other locations are available as rescue stations. After the completion of current construction projects, the rescue service has a total of 16 locations.

These 21 district fire brigades look after 20 youth fire brigades , in which around 350 children and young people are organized.

In 2009, as part of the update of the fire protection requirement plan, the city council decided to merge the Klotzsche and Hellerau district fire brigades (two of the five in the north of Dresden). The foundation stone for a new fire station was laid in May 2015 . The guard 22 was taken in June 2016 in operation and has space for two fire engines and a crew transport vehicle (MTF) as well as for an ambulance (RTW) in a separate operational area. A merger of the six fire departments in the Schönfeld highlands is planned for the longer term .
