A baby ambulance (in short: Baby NAW or BNAW ; and neonatal ambulance ) is in Germany specifically to the rescue of new and preterm scale ambulance , which mainly for laying journeys is provided. These vehicles appeared sporadically from the mid-1970s. Today they are hardly ever in use, as normal rescue vehicles can be equipped with mobile incubators and are better cushioned than before.

history

Until the mid-1970s, the Federal Republic of Germany had the highest infant mortality rate of any industrialized nation. This resulted from the fact that most deliveries took place in gynecological hospitals , while the infants or premature babies had to be treated in a children's hospital , which was rarely in the same building. In the 1970s, the Björn Steiger Foundation developed a vehicle that was specially designed for this type of transport. The first of these vehicles entered service in 1974. Due to the public relations work of the operating aid organizations , the necessity and existence of such vehicles is becoming more and more known, so that there are now a large number of baby ambulances.

Today baby ambulances are stationed in the largest German cities such as Munich, Hamburg, Cologne and Leipzig , but also in smaller cities such as Nuremberg , Datteln , Lübeck , Gelsenkirchen , Kiel and Ulm.

Areas of application

Baby ambulance in Dresden

In most cases, the Baby NAW is involved in the local rescue service. This is occupied by a paramedic as the transport guide and a paramedic or paramedic as the driver. As a rule, the transport is still in with a neonatal experienced pediatrician and a physician experienced in intensive care neonatologists, pediatric nurses accompanied. The Baby-NAW is used after problematic births, for transporting the incubator in neonatal centers, for home births or premature births as well as seriously injured infants. It often covers much longer distances than a regular ambulance.

Furnishing

Unlike ambulances , there are no uniform equipment regulations for infant ambulances . In any case, however, there is a transport incubator in the vehicle that is mounted on a cot . At best, this is mounted on a vibration-free support table with an active suspension system that is optimally matched to the weight of the incubator and the installed technology. In the newer vehicles, the incubator is located at right angles to the direction of travel in the middle of the vehicle, in the "quietest" place in the vehicle. To make this possible, extensive custom-made products are necessary. Loading and unloading then takes place through the side door - in contrast to the ambulance, which is done through the rear door. The secondary horn system is built in such a way that less noise reaches the patient.

Incubator in the vehicle

A mobile monitor is used to monitor the vital functions ( temperature , EKG , pulse oximetry and blood pressure ) . In addition to a suction pump , a special transportable ventilator for babies is available, which requires an oxygen and compressed air supply . Several syringe pumps are available for administering medication . The special medical equipment for premature and newborn babies (such as baby ventilation bags , intubation sets , intravenous cannulas and cutlery for intraosseous access ) and special medication are stored in a child's emergency case or child 's emergency backpack. Since the vehicle is usually involved in the local rescue service, there is also an emergency case for adults on the vehicle.

financing

Most of the baby ambulances available in Germany were and are still financed exclusively through donations. Public special subsidies are usually not available because this is an additional vehicle and is not absolutely necessary. Rescue organizations such as the German Red Cross , Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund or the Björn Steiger Foundation fight with the help of members every year to keep Baby-NAW.
