His older brother Hans Ullstein (1859–1935), younger brother Franz Ullstein (1868–1945) and half-brothers Rudolf Ullstein (1874–1964) and Hermann Ullstein (1875–1943) were also active in the publishing house. While Louis had trained as a businessman and was responsible for corporate strategy, Hans and Franz had studied law. Franz was also described as the “ghost” of the publisher.
