Kaskazini B is a district in the Tanzanian region of Unguja Kaskazini . The district borders in the north on the district Kaskazini A , in the south on the regions Unguja Kusini and Unguja Mjini Magharibi , in the east and west lies the Indian Ocean .

The landscape of the district consists of two parts, the coral beach in the east and west and the lowland, which takes up around 95 percent of the area. The climate in Kaskazini B is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . The temperature is between 20 and 40 degrees Celsius. There are two rainy seasons. The first from March / April to May is called “Masika” and there is 900 to 1200 millimeters of rain, the second, called “Vuli”, lasts from September / October to December and there is 400 to 500 millimeters of rainfall.

The Unguja Kaskazini region with the Kaskazina A and Kaskazini B districts was created in 1967. "Kaskazini" is a Swahili word and means "north".

Like many African areas, the district has a very youthful population, 42 percent of the inhabitants are under fifteen years of age. In 1988 there were 36,999 people in the district, 52,492 in 2002 and 81,675 in 2012. This corresponds to an annual growth rate of 4.4 percent over the past decade. During the same period, the literacy rate rose from 68 percent to 84 percent.

Facilities and services

  • Education: Kaskazini B has 19 pre-schools, 20 elementary schools and 12 secondary schools. The total of 17,388 students in 2016 taught 246 male and 428 female teachers. This corresponds to a teacher-student ratio of 1:26.
  • Health: There are 15 health centers in the district, two are privately operated and thirteen are state-run (as of 2015).
  • Water: In 2014/2015, 86 percent of households had clean drinking water in their homes. 96 percent had clean and safe water within a kilometer, 3 percent within two kilometers and 1 percent within three kilometers.
  • Electrical energy: The proportion of households with an electricity connection rose from eight percent in 2004/2005 to eighteen percent in 2014/2015.

Economy and Infrastructure

The most important branches of the economy are agriculture and trade.

  • Agriculture: The main crops are rice, sweet potatoes, cassava, yams , millet, bananas, fruits and vegetables. Around forty percent of households also kept farm animals, especially poultry and cattle (as of 2012)
  • Fishing: The coasts provide a good base for fishing, the fishing centers are Kidazini, Kiwengwa and Mangapwani. The yield increased from 345 tons in 2010 to 721 tons in 2014.
  • Trade: In 2015, 697 families were active in a trade.
  • Tourism: The beaches on the Indian Ocean are attractions for tourism. Hotel complexes were also built here.
