Chestnut on a domestic horse

As chestnut be Horn radicals on the inner sides of the legs in horses referred to, in which it is rudimentary bales - (carpal or Fußwurzelballen torus carpeus or tarseus ) - is. In addition to the domestic horse , the Przewalski horse also has chestnuts. Since the common lineage of the domestic horse and Przewalski horse split about 120,000 to 240,000 years ago, this characteristic must also have been pronounced in their ancestors. Occasionally there are animals with only two chestnuts in front of horses , more often in the banker horse and Icelandic horse breeds .

In contrast to horses, donkeys only have chestnuts in the front. The same applies to the species group Kiang / Dschiggetai / Khur / Kulan / Onager and the various zebra species. As a result, all variants occur with mules: two, four or even three chestnuts (if chestnuts are missing, then behind).

Chestnuts grow - like hooves - throughout their lives. If they become too long, they can be shortened without any problems, since they only consist of horny substance .
