The Katanga franc was from 1960 to 1963, the currency of the Congo (Kinshasa) breakaway province of Katanga .
The Katanga Franc was initially equal to both the Congo Franc and the Belgian Franc . Immediately after independence was declared unilaterally, a provisional series of banknotes of 5, 10, 20 and 50 francs was imprinted from the Rwanda-Burundi franc of the Belgian UN trust area Rwanda-Urundi . At the end of 1960 a series of banknotes for 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 francs with a uniform motif (portrait of Moïse Tschombé ) was issued. There were also coins of 1 and 5 francs with the Katanga cross on the value side.
Due to the increase in inflation from the end of 1961, the high values in particular became scarce, so that the Banque Nationale du Katanga issued a new series of banknotes from February to May 1962 with notes of 500, 1000 and 5000 francs. This second series shows different scenes from agriculture and handicraft.
In 1961 a gold 5 franc bullion coin was minted.
After the end of the secession, the Congo franc was used again.
