history

After the to 1919 to German East Africa belonging to the kingdoms of Rwanda and Burundi (former spelling: Urundi ) by the Treaty of Versailles as mandated territories were awarded to Belgium, the (first) was Congolese franc used as currency. The Banque du Congo Belge only officially became responsible for the mandate territory on October 10, 1927 through a contract with the administration of the Belgian colonial government and thus became the de facto central bank for the Belgian Congo and Rwanda-Urundi. This contract ran for 25 years. In 1952, the Banque Centrale du Congo Belge et du Ruanda-Urundi took over the issue of banknotes and coins . After the poorly prepared independence of Belgian Congo on June 30, 1960, a new currency had to be created for the trust area still under Belgian control. By royal decree on August 21, 1960, the Banque d'Emission du Rwanda et du Burundi was created and charged with issuing a new franc. The Rwanda Burundi Franc was introduced on September 2, 1960, when it was aligned with the gold standard of the Congo Franc. 1 Franc corresponded to 0.01974824173 grams of fine gold . The old Congo franc banknotes and coins could only be exchanged until September 22nd of that year, in order to prevent large quantities of the Congo franc, which was rapidly under pressure from the Congo, from entering the country. On the other hand, banknotes of the Rwanda-Burundi-Franc were introduced to Katanga and formed there, with overprints, the first, provisional banknote series of the Katanga-Franc .

After the independence of Rwanda and Burundi on July 1, 1962, the two states initially stuck to a common currency. It was not until April 1964, after preparations for the introduction of national currencies had been completed, that the Rwanda-Burundi-Franc was replaced by the Rwanda-Franc and the Burundi-Franc with effect from May 19, 1964 , and the tasks of the BERB to the new central banks of the two states transferred.
