The Kateretidae are a family of beetles (Coleoptera). The Kateretidae were previously considered to be the subfamily of the gloss beetles (Nitidulidae). A synonym is Brachypteridae .

The Kateretidae are distributed worldwide and are known with around 100 species in 14 genera. In Europe there are 24 species in 6 genera. In North America there are 13 species in 6 genera.

features

The Kateretidae differ from the Nitidulidae due to the structure of their mandibles , the 2 to 3-membered antennae and the shortened elytra , which do not extend over the last two abdominal segments. The elongated larvae are moderately enlarged towards the rear.

Way of life

The adult beetles can be found on various flowers whose pollen they eat. The larvae develop in the seed pods of various plants.
