history

Sacred Heart Cathedral Church in the background

The port city of Lomé existed in the port city of Lomé even before the German Empire took possession of parts of what is now Togo's territory , which was implemented on September 5, 1884 between the merchant Heinrich Randad, who was appointed consul in Lomé, and the King of Porto Seguro a strong French influence. The demarcation to the neighboring colonies was made by the Franco-German Agreement of July 23, 1897 and the agreement on the demarcation between Togo and the French possessions in Dahomey (now Benin ) and the French Sudan of September 28, 1912 and the German- British treaties of July 1, 1890 and November 14, 1899.

The Archdiocese of Lomé was spun off as Apostolic Prefecture on April 12, 1892 from the Apostolic Prefecture of Dahomey, established in 1883.

The concluded state treaties enabled the transnational work of Christian mission societies , including the Roman Catholic Society of Steyler Missionaries , who, as the Society of the Divine Word, tried to set up a mission station in the African port city of Lomé. After 1892 they were granted permission to build a first chapel, which, however, soon became too small for the rapidly growing Catholic community, so the construction of a church was applied for and construction began in 1901. The builder was brother Johannes (SVD) who later also built the palace for the German governor . The dimensions of the church are: length: 43 m, width: 15.5 m, height: 8 m. The building price was around 150,000 marks. The inauguration took place in 1902 by the Vicar Apostolic , Bishop Maximilian Albert (SMA) of Cape Coast in what is now Ghana .

The Archdiocese of Lomé was founded on September 14, 1955, the representative Church of the Sacré-Cœur de Lomé was designated as a cathedral church .
